Molecular Genetic Methods in Food Safety
Since molecular genetics diagnosis methods offer advantages over traditional test methods in terms of sensitivity, speed and accuracy, their applications are becoming widespread not only in GMO and origin analysis but also in microbiology analysis. Between variety of PCR technologies from conventional qualitative PCR method to quantitative Real time PCR method, nowadays are practiced in about 40 food control laboratories in Turkey. Digital PCR, the latest method developed in PCR technology, can minimize reaction inhibitors that may be present in the sample after DNA extraction with the droplet approach (by dividing DNA particles into droplets) and increases the reaction sensitivity and offers an advantage over Real-time PCR in that it does not require a calibration curve. In addition to PCR technologies, NGS (Next Generation Sequencing / Next Generation Sequencing) technology is expected to take its place among the routine diagnostic methods that can be used in the field of food safety, especially for the detection of unauthorized GMO species, as it is the best method that can be applied today to detect "unknown" DNA regions.
